Birth of the Land: Translating Shinto’s Primordial Act of “Kuniumi” into Ambient Soundscapes

Before the seas found their shores, and before the land had a name, there was a union—and there was a mistake. In Japanese mythology, creation does not arrive fully formed. Before the world can emerge, harmony must first be found. The story of Kuniumi (国生み)—the Birth of the Land—reveals that even creation depends upon the right order, the right words, and the right connection.

In the Kojiki, Japan’s oldest chronicle, Izanagi and Izanami circle the sacred pillar known as Ame no Mihashira to perform the ritual of creation. Yet, their first attempt is imperfect. The ritual is performed incorrectly, and the child born from their union cannot remain in the world. This unusual episode highlights a distinctive aspect of Shinto cosmology: even the gods must begin again. Creation is not a single, flawless act—it is a continuous process of correction, alignment, and renewal.

When Harmony Is Restored

The two deities return to the sacred pillar to try once more. This time, the sacred order is restored. The traditional ritual phrases—“Ananiyashi, eotome wo” and “Ananiyashi, eotoko wo”—mark the exact moment when harmony is finally achieved. Their voices answer one another, their union succeeds, and from that sacred connection, the islands of Japan begin to emerge. What was once incomplete now takes form; what was once pure possibility becomes reality.

Translating Creation Into Ambient Soundscapes

My composition, "Birth of the Land — 国生み —", explores this profound transformation from uncertainty to physical creation. The music begins in a restrained, reflective atmosphere, echoing the memory of a union that did not yet succeed. Something is missing; something has not yet found its place.

As the piece unfolds, balance gradually returns. The recurring phrase, “You called to me, and I called to you,” symbolizes the restoration of sacred order between Izanagi and Izanami. Finally, a calm yet powerful chorus reflects the success of that union—the majestic moment when land rises from the sea. Rather than merely retelling the myth, this composition captures the quiet transition from imperfection to form.
