Before the seas found their shores, and before the land had a name, there was a union—and there was a mistake. In Japanese mythology, creation does not arrive fully formed. Before the world can emerge, harmony must first be found. The story of Kuniumi (国生み)—the Birth of the Land—reveals that even creation depends upon the right order, the right words, and the right connection. In the Kojiki , Japan’s oldest chronicle, Izanagi and Izanami circle the sacred pillar known as Ame no Mihashira to perform the ritual of creation. Yet, their first attempt is imperfect.
