Gods’ Appearance: Translating Shinto’s Birth of the Gods “Kamiumi” into Ambient Soundscapes

Before the forests swayed, before the rivers found their paths, and before the mountains stood beneath the sky, the world already existed. But it had not yet begun to breathe. In Japanese mythology, creation does not end with the birth of the land. After the islands emerge, a new stage begins—the appearance of countless deities who embody the forces of nature itself. This stage is known as Kamiumi (神産み)—the Birth of the Gods.

In the Kojiki, Japan’s oldest chronicle, Izanagi and Izanami continue their act of creation after the land is formed. One after another, gods associated with the natural world come into being—gods of the sea, the wind, the mountains, the trees, the grasses, and nourishment. These deities are not separate from nature; they are nature itself. The landscape becomes sacred, and every river, every mountain, and every breath of wind carries a divine presence.

Yaoyorozu no Kamigami

A recurring concept in this narrative is “Yaoyorozu no Kamigami” (八百万の神)—the eight million gods. In Japanese tradition, this is not a literal number. It symbolizes the countless divine presences that inhabit the natural world. It reflects a profound worldview in which sacredness is not distant or unreachable, but woven directly into water, stone, trees, fields, and sky. As the gods appear, the world becomes richer, more vibrant, and truly alive.

Translating the Birth of Nature Into Sound

My composition, "Gods’ Appearance — 神産ミ —", explores the exact moment when a newly created world awakens into life. The music begins quietly, as though listening for the first pulse beneath the earth. As the piece unfolds, layers of sound gradually expand—rivers beginning to flow, forests taking root, and countless gods emerging throughout creation.

The atmosphere is brighter and more energetic than the earlier chapters of the series. What was once silence becomes movement; what was once pure possibility becomes growth. Rather than merely retelling the myth, this composition captures the feeling of nature awakening—the moment when life begins to spread across creation.
