Underworld: Translating Shinto's Shadow Realm "Yomi no Kuni" into Ambient Ballads

Before the farewell, before the sealed passage, and before the boundary could no longer be crossed, there was only longing. In Japanese mythology, few stories are as tragic as Izanagi’s descent into Yomi—the Land of the Dead. After the death of Izanami, the goddess he loved, Izanagi refuses to accept their separation. He follows her into the darkness, hoping to bring her back. But some boundaries cannot be undone.

In the Kojiki, Japan’s oldest chronicle, Yomi is not simply a place of death. It is a realm separated from the world of the living by an absolute boundary—a place where time stands still, and where voices fade into darkness. When Izanagi finally finds Izanami, she asks only one thing: "Do not look at me." Yet unable to resist, he breaks the taboo. In that moment, everything changes. The bond that once united them can never be restored, and the separation becomes permanent.

A Story of Loss Rather Than Death

What makes this myth so powerful is that it is not truly about death. It is about loss—about reaching toward someone who can no longer be reached, and hearing a voice that grows fainter no matter how far you follow it. It is the realization that love alone cannot erase certain boundaries. Yomi becomes more than a physical place; it becomes a poignant symbol of every profound distance that cannot be crossed.

Translating Yomi Into Sound

My composition, "Underworld — Yomi no Kuni（黄泉ノ国） —", explores the emotional landscape of that painful journey. Rather than focusing on fear or darkness, the music follows the path of longing, grief, and separation. The vocals carry the story with a cinematic, expressive presence, moving between fragile hope and overwhelming sorrow. The recurring phrase "Yomi no Kuni" serves as a constant reminder of the boundary that separates longing from reunion.

The emotional climax reflects the moment when hope collapses into reality—when the one you seek is finally found, yet can never truly be recovered. Rather than merely retelling the myth, this composition captures the feeling of reaching for someone you love while knowing they are already beyond your grasp. It is, at its heart, a cinematic ballad about loss, memory, and the pain of letting go.
