Divine Oath: Translating Shinto's Sacred Ritual of "Ukei" into Ambient Soundscapes
Before harmony, before reconciliation, and before heaven and earth returned to balance, there was conflict. In Japanese mythology, one of the most significant encounters takes place between Amaterasu, goddess of the sun, and her younger brother Susanoo, god of storms. Separated by opposing natures, they stand on the edge of confrontation. Yet instead of choosing conflict, they choose a sacred test. This ritual is known as Ukei (誓約)—a divine oath through which truth is revealed.
In the Kojiki, Japan’s oldest chronicle, Susanoo ascends to the heavenly realm to meet Amaterasu. His arrival brings fear and uncertainty, as Amaterasu suspects his intentions may be hostile. To prove his heart is pure, they perform a sacred ritual: Amaterasu receives Susanoo’s sword, and Susanoo receives Amaterasu’s jewels. From these sacred objects, new deities are born. Rather than deciding truth through battle, the divine oath allows truth to reveal itself, allowing suspicion to give way to clarity.
Between Storm and Sun
What makes this episode unique is its balance. Neither side fully yields; neither side fully conquers. Instead, the story unfolds in the fragile space between opposition and harmony—storm and sunlight, movement and stillness, emotion and order. The oath becomes a bridge connecting two seemingly incompatible forces. Through that connection, new light enters the world, and the ultimate result is not victory, but cosmic balance.
Translating Ukei Into Sound
My composition, "Divine Oath — Ukei(誓約) —", explores the emotional landscape surrounding this sacred encounter. The music moves between turmoil and stillness, reflecting the emotional distance between Amaterasu and Susanoo before the oath is made. The opening carries the weight of unrest and longing, like a storm searching for understanding, and a voice reaching across an impossible divide.
The recurring phrase “Ukei” serves as a reminder that truth does not always emerge through conflict; sometimes it appears through trust, restraint, and sacred intention. As the piece unfolds, the atmosphere transforms into clarity and harmony. Rather than retelling the myth itself, this composition seeks to capture the moment when conflict gives way to understanding and truth becomes visible. It is a musical reflection on conflict, truth, and the light that emerges when reconciliation finally becomes possible.
