Redemption: Translating Shinto's Awakening of the Heroic Spirit "Kami no Kakusei" into Ambient Soundscapes
Before the dragon, before the heroic deeds, and before redemption could be seen by the world, there was struggle. In Japanese mythology, Susanoo is often remembered as a god of storms, chaos, and destruction. Yet beneath that turbulent power lies something deeper—a loneliness, a sense of displacement, and a longing to find a place where he truly belongs. After the events of Ama-no-Iwato, the first signs of change begin to emerge, not in the world around him, but within himself.
In the Kojiki, Japan’s oldest chronicle, Susanoo is frequently portrayed as a disruptive force whose grief, anger, and frustration spill outward. But destruction is rarely born from cruelty alone; often it grows from pain that has nowhere to go. The opening of this composition reflects that emotional landscape—a god carrying a storm he cannot control, standing among the ruins, uncertain of who he has become. Yet even amid destruction, life continues, and new growth begins where something old has fallen away.
A Light Within the Storm
As the story unfolds, a subtle transformation begins. The storm remains, but a quieter voice and a fragile light appear beside it, giving him a reason to look beyond anger. It marks the moment when Susanoo first begins to recognize that strength does not exist only to destroy; it can also protect, guide, and create. What begins as regret slowly becomes awareness, and awareness becomes purpose. The recurring phrase “Kami no Kakusei” (勇神ノ覚醒)—The Awakening of the Divine Spirit—symbolizes this inner turning point.
Translating Redemption Into Sound
My composition, "Redemption — 勇神ノ覚醒 —", explores the emotional journey from destruction to transformation. The music begins with a heavier and more turbulent atmosphere, reflecting the restless storm within Susanoo. As the piece unfolds, moments of calm gradually emerge. The tension does not disappear; instead, it changes shape as the storm becomes direction, anger becomes resolve, and darkness becomes understanding.
Rather than focusing on external events, this composition explores the myth unfolding within Susanoo himself—the story of a god confronting his own shadow and discovering a different path forward. At its heart, this piece is a cinematic reflection on redemption, self-discovery, and the courage to become something greater than one’s past.
